The nights are coming earlier, the air is colder, and the wind is beginning to bite. Suddenly, my happy pink banner with the sun and the green trees didn't seem so appropriate anymore. Thus, to signify the dark half of the year I have switched to the night scene.
If I were computer savvy, I would create a beautiful banner depicting fall leaves, pumpkins, turkeys, and perhaps (for my Starbucks-loving self), a pumpkin spice latte. This whimsical banner would somehow convey my thanks for the passing year and the anticipation I feel for celebrating the upcoming holidays with young children.
But alas, I stink at graphics. Thus I am stuck with the generic banners supplied by Typepad. So dark blue trees, it is.
Some of my friends have become somewhat depressed with the change of time and season. Though I'll miss the carefree days of summer (oh, those lazy mornings, God how I miss those, sob), I sort of like the cold and dark. I like that my kids are inside by 4:30 because it's just too dark to play any later than that. I like that I need to turn the lights on before I even think about starting dinner. I like that doing something simple as lighting a candle can chase the gloom to the corners. (I also like that lighting a yummy-smelling candle makes it seem as if I have been baking all day.) I like thinking about what all of this signals...
the holidays are coming.
Cozy nights. Good food. Family. Friends. Twinkly lights. Sing-a-long music. A warm fire. Maybe some eggnog from my new milkman. (Yes, a milkman! In 2009!)
Yeah, I'm ok with the darkness. For now. I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune in January. I'll be sure to blog about it.
